Resilient Horned Frogs Split Weekend With Texas State

The TCU Horned Frogs closed out their season this weekend at NYTEX Sports Centre with a split against the Texas State Bobcats, despite being severely outmanned in both games.

Friday night’s tilt featured an implosion by Texas State, as the team found its way into penalty trouble for the game’s entirety, including two disqualifications for Saturday’s rematch between the two teams. After goals by forwards junior Cody Ross and senior Jake Wallstedt left the game in a 2-2 tie after two periods, freshman forward Gunnar Roadfeldt potted a goal early in the third, assisted by Wallstedt.

Texas State erased the deficit and quickly added another to bring the score to 4-3 before penalty trouble led to two Horned Frog goals by junior Trevor Sullivan and Roadfeldt. Ross added an insurance marker on a breakaway tally assisted by Wallstedt to bring the score to 6-4. Texas State added another mark with 40 seconds left in the game but could not muster another one to tie it up.

Thomas Scoggin was again tremendous in net for the Horned Frogs, stopping 32 shots, including a game-saving side-to-side blocker stop to keep the Horned Frogs on top with less than 15 seconds remaining.

Final Score: Horned Frogs 6, Texas State 5

Saturday’s game did not end the same for the Horned Frogs as an early lead for Texas State could not be overcome, despite a three-goal second period.

Texas State scored twice in each period playing against a depleted Horned Frogs lineup. Goals from Ross, Sullivan, and Brett Jacobson had the Horned Frogs down by one heading into the third period, before Roadfeldt tied the game midway through the third period with a wrist shot from the right circle. However TCU could not generate any more offense on tired legs, and Texas State scored two goals less than a minute apart to take the lead for good.

Scoggin’s night in net was a busy one, facing 50 shots and stopping 44.

Final Score: Horned Frogs 4, Texas State 6
